The Titanopteridae were a fascinating family of giant prehistoric insects related to modern-day crickets and katydids.
They lived during the Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic eras, over 250 million years ago!
Features:
- Huge wingspans, sometimes reaching over 30 cm (12 inches)
- Robust bodies adapted for powerful flight
- Mysterious sound-producing organs, possibly used for communication
Sadly, the Titanopteridae family is extinct, wiped out by ancient climate changes and mass extinction events.
Their fossils give us a rare glimpse into the incredible diversity of insects that once ruled the skies.
