The Goliathus regius, or Regal Goliath Beetle, lives up to its name with bold white markings on a dark exoskeleton, giving it a royal, almost armor-like appearance. Native to West Africa, it thrives in humid, tropical forests where it plays an important role in breaking down decaying plant material.
Adult males use their strong forelegs and cephalic horn to wrestle rivals for access to food or mates. They feed on tree sap and overripe fruit, while the larvae—among the heaviest of any insect—can weigh over 100 grams before pupating.
Despite its intimidating size, G. regius is peaceful and can even be handled, making it a favorite in exotic insect collections.
