Greta oto, better known as the glasswing butterfly, is one of nature’s most delicate illusions. Native to Central and South America, this butterfly stands out not with colors, but with transparency.
Its wings are made of microscopic scales that refract minimal light, making the wings appear invisible. This helps it avoid predators in dense rainforest habitats, blending in like a ghost.
Despite its fragile look, G. oto is a strong flier. It can travel great distances and is often seen gliding among flowers such as lantana and verbena.
Interestingly, males ingest toxic alkaloids from certain plants and pass them on to females during mating, which protects both adult and larva from predators.
The glasswing is a reminder that power in nature often lies in subtlety, not flash.
