The Africanized honey bee, often called the “killer bee,” is not just a myth. Originating from a crossbreed between European and African bees, this insect is highly defensive and reacts aggressively to threats.
Unlike typical honey bees, Africanized bees attack in larger numbers and pursue intruders for much longer distances. Their stings are no more venomous, but the sheer number of stings can be deadly, especially for allergic individuals.
These bees usually nest in hollow trees, abandoned rodent burrows, or even inside walls of buildings. If you accidentally disturb their nest, expect a rapid and overwhelming swarm response.
For gardeners, maintenance workers, and outdoor enthusiasts, recognizing their presence is crucial to avoid dangerous encounters. If you see a large cluster of bees or unusual bee activity, keep your distance and call a professional beekeeper or pest control expert.
