The Entomologist’s Diary – Episode 23: Danger Signals – The Chemistry of Insect Alarm Pheromones 🚨🐜🧪

Today, I uncovered how insects use alarm pheromones to warn their colony of threats. When an insect senses danger, it releases these chemical signals to alert others and trigger defensive behaviors.

For example, aphids emit E-β-farnesene, a well-studied alarm pheromone that causes nearby aphids to flee or drop off the plant to escape predators.

In social insects like ants and bees, alarm pheromones can summon reinforcements or cause aggressive attacks on intruders.

In my journal, I wrote:
“A tiny molecule can spark a colony-wide emergency response — chemistry saves lives.”

Tomorrow, I’ll look into how environmental factors affect the production and detection of these pheromones.
