🐜 What Are Thrips?
Thrips are tiny insects from the order Thysanoptera, often just 1–2 mm long. Despite their size, they have a huge agricultural impact, both as pests and virus vectors.
🔍 Microscopic but Mighty
- They have asymmetrical mouthparts used for piercing and sucking plant cells.
- Wings (if present) are narrow and fringed with hairs.
- Their feeding causes silvering, deformities, and leaf curling.
🌿 Host Range
Thrips attack:
- Vegetables (onions, tomatoes, peppers),
- Ornamental plants (roses, gladiolus),
- Fruit trees and even cereal crops.
They prefer young tissue, where they can hide and reproduce rapidly.
🦠 Virus Carriers
Thrips are primary vectors of Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and other Tospoviruses, which can devastate crops.
⚔️ Management Tips
- Use blue or yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce populations.
- Encourage predators like Orius bugs and lacewings.
- Use insecticidal soaps or neem oil early in infestation.
- Avoid over-fertilization, which promotes soft growth favored by thrips.
🔄 Fun Fact
Thrips is both singular and plural (like “sheep”)!
