🪲 Meet the Tenebrionidae
Commonly known as darkling beetles, the family Tenebrionidae includes thousands of species adapted to arid and semi-arid environments.
You’ve likely encountered one: the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio molitor), a species used as feed and even as future food for humans.
🌵 Desert Adaptations
Tenebrionids are masters of drought survival:
- Their waxy cuticle minimizes water loss.
- Some species, like Onymacris unguicularis, collect dew from fog by standing on their heads!
- They are nocturnal, hiding during the hot daytime and foraging at night.
🍃 Diet and Role in the Ecosystem
- Mostly detritivores: they feed on decaying organic matter.
- Essential in nutrient cycling in dry ecosystems.
- Some species also feed on seeds, fungi, or stored grains (as pests).
⚠️ Agricultural Relevance
Certain species are pests in stored products:
- Tribolium castaneum (red flour beetle),
- Alphitobius diaperinus (lesser mealworm, also a poultry pest).
But many others are beneficial decomposers.
🧠 Did You Know?
In the Namib Desert, some tenebrionids use capillary grooves on their backs to funnel moisture from morning fog directly to their mouths.
