It was a moonless night when a strange metallic flapping broke the stillness of the forest. Something flew overhead—not alive, but definitely airborne. Dracula Bugs, sipping elder sap from a hollow walnut shell, narrowed his eyes.
“A bat… but it has no heartbeat,” he murmured.
The sound was unmistakable: click-clack, click-clack. Gears and springs, not wings and sinew.
He followed the flying shadow to the Cathedral Tree, where a gang of steampunk beetles were fine-tuning their latest invention: a drone shaped like a bat, designed to scare off bird predators.
“An experiment?” Dracula Bugs asked, insulted.
“No, it’s art!” they answered proudly.
With a hiss and a flash of his fangs, Dracula Bugs growled, “But I’m the original!” Then he bit the circuitry, frying the bat-bot with a dramatic fzzzt.
