Van Helsing’s latest mystery took him to the swamps of the Everglades, where a strange plague of sleep was spreading. People woke up gasping, exhausted, with strange red marks on their skin — yet no mosquitoes were seen.

But Van Helsing suspected the culprit wasn’t just any mosquito. Deep in the murky waters, he found a secret mosquito society wearing elaborate disguises made from swamp debris and bioluminescent algae. These mosquitoes had evolved to mimic other insects and even small amphibians, allowing them to sneak close to victims unnoticed.

What’s more, these mosquitoes were not feeding on blood — but on dreams, injecting a neurotoxin that induced prolonged sleep and vivid nightmares, sapping the will of entire villages.

Van Helsing used a special ultrasound emitter tuned to mosquito wingbeats, disrupting their “masquerade” signals and forcing them into daylight — where they were vulnerable to predatory dragonflies.

The swamp returned to peace, but Van Helsing knew the nightmare had only just begun.

Entomological Fact 🔬
Mosquitoes use wingbeat frequency to recognize and find mates. Some species can even adjust their wingbeat to match the opposite sex during courtship. Bioluminescent algae exist in some swamp environments and are used by various aquatic organisms for communication or camouflage.
